My name is Steven Bailey and I am the Chief Political Strategist for the Democratic Reform Alliance and the former leader of the Sex Party ACT. I am a long term resident of Canberra and live in Belconnen.
I am seeking to nominate as an independent candidate for the seat of Fenner (covering Gunghalin and parts of Belconnen) in the next federal election.
I am running as an independent under the auspices of the Democratic Reform Alliance (DRA), which is an alliance of candidates seeking to establish better accountability and transparency mechanisms in the Parliament in an effort to produce better levels of political representation than we are now receiving.
The DRA is an anti-corruption party that is critical of the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party of Australia, has a moderate platform of reform, and does not place itself on the left or right of the political spectrum.
While we have a moderate platform, like many people we have had a gutful of the litany of abuses and conflicts of interest of our major party politicians and their failure to represent the electorate and want to do something about it.
Frankly, we want to renovate the bastards and restore some integrity to political life in Australia.
The DRA Platform contains a limited number of policies grouped into four themes aimed at creating accountability and reducing corruption in the political system and providing greater opportunity for the participation of ordinary Australians in the governing of Australia.
We have called for a Royal Commission into Political Corruption and Institutional Conflicts of Interest in the Australian Political System to investigate major and minor violations of the law over the last 15 years.
We support binding plebiscites on critical social issues including euthanasia, drug law reform, implementation of foreign treaties, and decisions to commit troops overseas.
Finally, we believe the Governor General should be directly elected by the Australian people within the current constitutional framework.
We have a vision of Australian democracy that pushes beyond the current framework of limited participation and stage-managed elections. The Australian people are full of good common sense and we have everything to gain from extending our ability to participate in the political process.
To support my run for Fenner I need 100 people to nominate me so that I can register my candidature with the Australian Electorate Commission. I would be very happy if you could nominate me for this role.
To do this you have to be on the electoral roll in Canberra and provide a real signature on a paper form.
I will carry the form with me in the coming weeks, but otherwise could you please indicate your willingness to nominate me and I will be in touch with you to arrange a time to meet and sign the form.
If you have any questions about this project or would like to get involved on any level, I am happy to meet you.
Thank you for your support.
